How would a Yaris liftback compare to an early 80's Tercel liftback ...

in terms of size, weight, performance, interior room, fuel economy, etc ...

I'd say it depends on your budget, this is if you're trying to compare the two for buying purposes. If you're looking for just a liftback then I'd get a new model if you can afford it. A 1980's whatever was build with 1980's technology. Sure, we're not flying yet but the technology has progress in 20 years.

My family had a 4 door Tercel liftback when I was growing up (yeah the car pretty much grew up with me, I'm an 80's baby) and it had a bit more room than the Yaris. Enough room for two adults, three kids, and beach/camping gear, etc. Size, it's longer, wider and taller than the Yaris. It didn't do so bad on fuel, it was in the 30's IIRC (if i recall correctly). Yet most of these vehicles are now over 20 years old. It's kind of an apples/oranges type of comparison.

I like the old stuff, but in reality the new stuff is so much more refined as far as handling/braking/ergonomics (not to mention emissions)....sort of like comparing the AW11 MR2 (80's) with the MR2 Spyder, so much in common statistically but the Spyder is such an improvement!!!!

The old Tercel was a tin can. When you shut the doors on that class of vehicle they would produce a ultrasonic frequency that made dogs howl (LOL)! Ya, it was reliable and all, but the new Yaris is light years ahead in all categories except fuel economy. I can't remember the vehicle weight of the old Tercel, but I suspect it was composed of more metal. The difference between then and now kind of reminds me of the first time I ever rode in a car with radials. The bias-ply tires where just fine until your realized what you where missing.

Some basic stats from MSN autos for an '88 Tercel... 1.5L inline 4, producing 78 horsepower... EPA MPG is 31/37. No mention of weight or interior volume though.

Hey, no sadface! Geos rock! My friend Matt drove an automatic Geo Metro FOREVER! It simply would... not... die, and he drove it like he was qualifying for NASCAR. We called it the "Mighty Mighty Geo". It finally threw a rod while running 80 mph down the interstate. Matt said he could hear the pieces bouncing away underneath his car when it exploded.

What a sad day.

What's really funny is picturing Matt in a Geo. He's 6'3" and has weighed between 260-325 lbs ever since I've known him. He didn't get in the Geo, he put it on.

It's funny that you mention that. I am about 5'10" and go about 170, but most of the other small cars around here are driven by real big guys like your friend? On the flip side of the coin most of the monsters SUV's are driven by tiny wimmins? As a matter of fact I just went to Wally World for grub and witnessed a huge dude get in a Miata and drive off with the poor little car listing to the left.

I had a 79 corolla like that...towards the end it ran on 3 cylinders! Nothing like a modern car tho, as far as quality, comfort, safety (no airbag, etc).

I had sadface yesterday. Jackasses in pickup truck kept holding up their hands like a foot apart, and all i think was "are you trying to tell me size of your penis?" But no, they were laughing at my Yaris So I just dropped the hammer and left them so far back in traffic it was rendonkulous... I know you men have taken some abuse from macho farktards, but what kind of asshats laugh at a girl

Hmmm, I guess I never get that kind of negative reaction because of my age? I normally have folks asking me about make, model, power source and fuel mileage. The only obvious negative response has been a few times at the pumps when SUV pilots look at my total total purchase and sneer.
