No, I think he means the reverse "whine" associated with straight cut (spur) gears found in almost all reverse gears (versus the forward gears being helical).

In such case, very normal.

hmm.. i don't think there's a synchro for the reverse gear.

hmm...reading it again, I can see what you mean PK.

I guess Bruinei would have to elaborate for us.

I've experience the "clunking" too...so in either case, it's normal. For me if it did a clunk, it means I threw it into reverse a bit too fast.

I just bought a brand new Yaris a couple of days ago, and when I start driving, the first time I put it into reverse, I hear a "clunk" noise as I change the gear, before I even start moving. If, still without moving, I take it out of reverse, put it into 1st gear, and back into reverse, it doesn't make the noise. What's the deal with that? I doubt there's anything wrong with the car, but I would like to understand what's causing the noise, and if there's a better way to do it so that it won't make the noise.

Every car I've ever driven has the same sound in reverse. They all also had more power than the Yaris, so it wasn't something I ever paid much attention to before. The Yaris tends to stall in reverse or first if not given the right amount of gas, so I'm more focused on it with this car.

^Not sure what it is, but it's VERY important to always be COMPLETELY STOPPED before going into reverse. That clunk and scrape noise could mean trouble down the road if you're still creeping forward during the shift.

Like I said, I'm not moving. This is happening from a complete standstill, like when backing out of a parking spot for example. I just want to make sure it's normal and that I'm not doing something harmful or damaging to the vehicle.
