At least you didnt total it...I live on top of a mountain and I had left my old nissan in reverse because the parking brake didnt work...I woke up about halfway through the night when I heard a crash to find it flipped on its side against a tree after rolling only god knows how many times down the embankment.....Good news I ran it to the junkyard and got the money off of it to pay the down payment on my Yaris....I shoulda totaled it sooner^_-

I have an automatic and do not use the parking brake. I exercise the e-brake and move it about once a week but here in VT parking brakes freeze up all the time and so do regular brakes when set.

I would almost suggest a chock for a wheel ...........

Since this has happened you WILL NEVER let it happen again. It is similar to a boater forgetting the plug...... shit happens. Glad no body was hurt.

Chalk it up as experiance

I saw this video on true tv. Where the guy just bought a brand new truck. He went to 711 to buy something and left his car running. Somehow it poped in reverse and then started to roll backwards made a loop through the parking lot out through the steet and somehow parallel parked itself in the parking lot across the street and poped back into park. When he came out he thought someone stole his car and then when the police came to watch the survalance video they coudlnt believe thier eyes.

Luckly no one was hurt and not even a scratch on his car.

I had my VW Fox do something like that once - it was the day I found out the e-brake REALLY needed adjusting. Rolled down the driveway and across the road into a neighbor's hedge. Luckily she laughed and just asked me to move my car

I did that with my Yaris right after I got it. Comes with the territory of relearning how to drive a stick car. She will rise from the ashes, no worries.

i always park in gear with the brake up

i think it comes from having older cars where the e brake never really had good holding power

i had an XB back in the day, i parked it on a hill with the e brake up and in gear (mind you this was brand new) and i hear this creaking, and it would slowly start rolling backwards

so i stood there watching it for 10 mins slowly inching backwards

that car had some issues straight from the factory, im glad i sold it

If you don't regularly use the parking brake, the rear drum brakes will get out of adjustment on many cars. Haven't checked the Yaris manuals to see if it's true on this one. But I've been setting my brake in the expectation that it is how it works, as well as for safety.

I once left my 1940 Ford out of gear with the parking brake off, and it rolled slowly across a parking lot into the side of a Dodge Challenger. It didn't damage the Ford, only scratched my parking sticker. Folded in the quarter panel of the Challenger.

I had a civic with a broken e ebrake, and it popped out of gear and rolled into a gas pump one time...

dont feel too bad, thats the reason i bought the new bumper from garm, except my little accident (not setting brake hard enough) was in a restarant parking lot and rolled downhill two lines of cars into the wall around the outside dining area luckily it didnt hit the frame hard

I should try that with my new Yaris. Better to know now instead of later.

Both these are good - the other thing you can do is turn the nearside wheel into the kerb so it's touching and won't want to go anywhere. We don't get much snow over here, (if we have two inches the country closes down!) but's it's useful for slippy weather.

It's a habit for me to pull the e-brake when in a standard.

Honestly, I'm glad to read that it was an e-brake thing and wasn't stolen. I've come out to where I thought I parked my car and it wasn't there and had been stolen (1998 Honda Civic). Worst feeling ever.
