I too am looking to go to AMsoil 75W-90, I did find these two topics on the Scions. At least they are a starting point on what to do if you need a visual reference.

Here is another topic from Scionlife with lots of info on changing the manual tranny fluid as well as info on particular gear oil to use.

I thought I've used the wrong oil.I just did my first oil change @ 2k miles. I replaced both motor and transaxle (manual transmission) fluids @ 2k miles since my wife is a stick-shift noob and I feel secured to get it done early. I use "Eneos-0w20" for motor oil, and "AMS SEVERE GEAR Synth 75-90" for the tranny. Why? Don't ask but let me finish... I know Eneos' quality and I am a JDM fan, but since Eneos has not released their 75w90 in USA so I pick the best by AMS. But why sever-duty grade in a little Yaris? I was not so sure but it was recommended by a good friend who works in the parts store. So the truth is on all newer Toyotas, the manual tranny does require GL4 or GL5 fluids as it says in Techinfo-Toyota. I could not find out more support material about AMS's "SEVERE GEAR Synth 75-90" but I guess I have to trust good friends' advise when I am not a pro at it. With or without the servere-grade label, I pick the servere grade since I notice frequently I push the car a bit harder than my other cars since the Yaris has a small engine. Now the car runs much smoother and overall vibration has clammed down a lot. It works!! I am also expecting to see some gaining in MGP in next few weeks. ![]() ![]()

Joseph.... I have found that if you are pushing the car every now and again. 0w20 is no good.... the 20 weight is a little too thin... need to go to 0w30 if you are harder on your car, that is what I am now running, I had to change the 0w20 early because it was so dark, yes it was full synth.... after doing a little more reading online 0w30 is the way to go, it is actually the #1 recommended replacment oil for cars that came with 5w30 from the factory

They also happened to specify that for the engine itself as an option in climates that didn't get below 20F/-7C, so on my '86 Civic I had straight 30W oil in the entire vehicle.

The redline is a GL-4, and is designed specifically for Toyota synchros.

On their site I'm seeing 75w-90 and 75w-90 NS, both listed as GL-5. I really didn't study what they claimed about the 75w-90, but the 75w-90 NS shows to work in transmissions, as well as differentials. If they had a 3rd choice of a GL-4 75w-90 I guess I didn't find it. |

Thanks. We're gettin' things done now. That's three synthetic 75W-90s that we know for sure are GL-4 rated: Redline MT-90, AMSOIL's transmission/transaxle fluid, Pennzoil's GL-4 75W-90

After putting the MT-90 in nearly all my cars...I highly recommend it in the Yaris. The shifts are like butter now (especially reverse).

1963 split Window Corvette Fuelie (MINT)
1973 Camaro Type LT with 383 stroker (MINT) 1988 BMW M3-Evo 3 spec (MINT) 1988 BMW 535is and a few others for now... I am waiting for the market to turn around a bit before I get excited over anything else. I will be building a 6 car garage and adding onto my house in the next few years so...a lot of money will be funneled in that direction. |
