cv joint ???
hi guys
again a big thanks with help on my last issue ![]() I have a new one though about a couple of weeks now occasionaly when i come to reverse there is a clicking sound from the front. thought may be ffrom gearbox area but seems to be from the wheel area ( cv Joint ) maybe. car is a 1.5 t sport with 90k miles I have made a couple of enquiries but everyone seems to say it just needs repacking with grease and it should not require replacing asi have only noticed it when reversing and i think on full lock ( or is it our lazy in house m-canic ) not urgent as when driving forward which is most of the time the car is great !!!!! thanks. |

are there any rips on any of your CV boots? do you see any grease on the inside of a rim?
maybe it's a bearing, but that should be easy to verify by jacking the car, spinning the wheel and listening for any clicks or hum. Also may want to shake the wheel to see if there's any play. but yeah, if it's a CV joint a repair should be possible. if a boot is torn you will need to replace that but that shouldn't be too expensive.

full lock meaning the steering wheel turned as far as it can go? in that case, can't you jack it up (onto jack stands for safety), rotate the steering and spin the each wheel backwards? i'd think if you listen closely you'll hear where the clicks are coming from.

Are you running stock tires/wheels or something else? Since it only happens at the end of the steering travel, it could be the tire catching the inside of the wheel well.

btw, if it is indeed a CV joint, instead of repairing it you probably can get a re-manufactured axle. Around here these go for about a 100$ which is just a tad above than an hour of labor at an independent shop. But then there's labor to put it in, of course, but is these remans come with some kind of warranty it may be worth it.
Just don't buy aftermarked axles, in my (admittedly limited) experience these are often problematic.

Find a cul-de-sac and turn the wheel full lock either direction. Then accelerate forward and in reverse. If it is a worn CV joint it will go click click click with every rotation of the wheel while accelerating. If it is clicking it means the joint is worn and the axle should be replaced. It can wait until it gets louder and more common though.
