Interestingly enough, the only time I've ever been exposed to that (could hear and see a few explosions from the road in a valley we were driving through) was driving from Belfast to Dublin toward the tail end of skirmishes re The Troubles. Also had to go through some sort of makeshift checkpoint on that drive.
