Why does the poll show only two choices?

Do this: Pick the "worse" and cheapest synthetic oil on the market that has the current API ratings (SM). Use that oil and your car will last no less long as if you had used AMSOIL or Mobil1 or any of the other brands.

People say this oil is great or that oil is great but how do they know? They like the purple color? They think paying a premium means longer lasting car? How many of these people actually send a used oil sample to a testing lab like BlackStone for thorough analysis? Yet the ones that don't have their used oil analyzed will push their brand of choice hard. Lots of hearsay, lots of parroting the claims of others.

Me? I use the cheapest on-sale full synthetic and don't have the dillusion that one is much better the the other. I've seen the UOA's (used oil analysis) at BobIsTheOilGuy dot com and I'm convinced that as long as (1) the oil has the latest ratings (2) is synthetic, (3) correct viscosity and (4) mated with a decent filter, your car will last 300,000+ miles regardless of brand.

Please guys lets not turn motor oil into a religion filled with passion and fervor ;-)

...you claim that 5w20 is "TSB'd" for the Yaris (you're thinking Scion XD?), and you wrote that you use 0w (wouldn't matter if a 20 or 30 followed because my Yaris owner's states 5w30 only)...so, to follow your rule number (3) start using the "correct viscosity" if you're still expecting to see that 300k miles on your motor.

You're confused, but that's okay. I do follow my rules. The TSB shows 20 weight for our engines, and I use 20 weight, and the UOA's show less wear then if I used 30 weight. Sure, the filler cap shows 30 weight, BUT the TSB which came out later says otherwise. I'm sticking with the TSB. As to 0W weight, I use that because at full operational temperature 0w-20 and 5w-20 protect exactly the same; hence the 20 part of those grades. The 0w on cold mornings flows to the upper parts of thje engine faster and gets to more parts of the internals faster.

It's okay that you're too dense to read...the TSB *notes* the 0w-20 is for the 2AZ-FE engine, not the Yaris 1NZ-FE engine...you did a XD motor swap in your Yaris?!

And if you live in CA why worry about those "cold mornings flows"...besides, in that TSB that you're swearing by, take note of the note @ the top of the page:

"The recommended viscosity grade for this oil differs according to vehicle model. Use the recommended grade specified on the oil filler cap or in the Repair Manual or Owner’s Manual for each vehicle."
