My only concern with a filter magnet is that if enough gunk were to build up in the filter, the magnet would hold it all in the filter in the spot with the magnet. It could potentially reduce the flow of oil.

The drain plug isn't in such a crucial flow path.

If you've got that much metalic "gunk" building up in your filter, you've got far worse problems to deal with.
