Takin' em' off I just use an ice pick, jab a hole parallel to the 'tip' of the oil filter, let em' drip empty, twist to break em' free, unscrew by hand.
And new ones I always install (Yaris or otherwise) by backspinning until the screw threads seat, then spinning on as fast as I can by hand until they stop on their own, a quick quarter to half turn from there, I'm done.

Good advise! My former car had a larger filter and I could get a good hand hold and take the filter off by hand. There isn't the space or size on a Yaris. But like I said, lesson learned!
