the ones with the shield is designed for a halogen replacement
also, they make them now with dual filament. they're more expensive, but also more reliable. they have 2 ballasts, 2 sets of wires, and 2 full active filaments. they're the best designed, and best working. they're actually designed to put light where the light was meant from the factory. but, you also have 2 ballasts to locate, and 2 pairs of wires to run into the headlight assembly.
a guy in my shop has a set. he paid 295 bucks. he ran them properly (as he is an auto tech) and 2 months later one of his ballasts failed. the company only warranted the bulbs, so he uninstalled them. i'd have jumped on it if he would have taken less than 150 for it, but he wouldnt go less than 200. so....i'm stuck with halogen now. i'm going with the $89 unit from garm. one ballast, one bulb, and an extra wire to move the shield when i want highs...which i never use any way. there's a pic somewhere on here with a white car that runs them. the beam pattern is flawless and looks factory.
