I put the rubber bushing back into place (so it's actually several pieces at the moment until I have time to go to the junkyard and find another one) and placed it over the SSK piece. Shifts nice. Not that much shorter of a throw though but noticeable. Here is a pic from a Corolla linkage with the same piece stuck! That brass piece is glued to the rubber bushing. I ended up ripping some of it off so I could get to the brass piece.
