I ended up pulling the blades out of the new ones and installing it in the arm of the OEM ones, and now have the complete swipe back. If I remember correctly the ones that I bought were Dayco brand.

The one time (during the 'life' of my Yaris) that I addressed 'refreshing' the effectiveness of the rear wiper, I ended up doing the same thing you did.
