I thought that the solenoid replaced the Bendix by using a lever arm instead of a threaded interface to extend/retract the pinion. Mostly being a nitpick, but curious if I've misunderstood something. =)

This is the weird thing - the yaris starter contains a typical solenoid which as you said uses a lever to engage the pinion and send power to the main starter motor. Thus making it a pre engagement type starter.

However, it uses a screw type gear that you see in an inertia type starter that doesn't use a solenoid. I'm not exactly sure why the worm type/bendix gear is used on top of the solenoid, I've been trying to wrap my head around it for a while.

All I know is that when it is not lubed and it is gunked up it stops the pinion from engaging as you would see in a typical inertia type starter.

It seems as if the yaris starter is a combo of the 2 types for what ever reason
