I like Eneos. 5w-30. I'll be switching over all my cars from Redline soon.
Probably still use M1 in the yaris, but i'll try it out and see. |

If Toyota says we can use 20 weight oil, then that means 0W-20 and 5W-20. At operational temperature both these oils will protect the same. The only difference is that in very cold temperatures, the 0W will pump a bit easier, but not a lot easier then the 5W. Same for 5W-30 and 0W-30....an engine that runs on one can run on the other. |

PENNZOIL Platinum ( synthetic ) 5w-30 in '08 Liftback and the PLATINUM 5w-20 in the '08 sedan . Can get the PLATINUM for less than $4 a quart when on sale ( A.A.P. or PEPBOYS ) or at WALLYMART in a 5 quart jug for less than $20 .

Any SM-rated 5w-30. Currently on Motomaster Formula 1 (blended by Shell for Canadian Tire IIRC) dino for rated five-to-six-month intervals. I don't clock enough mileage to change it out beforehand.

Are there any national auto parts stores that sell oil like Amsoil or Royal Purple or do I have to order the stuff online? I am coming up on my first oil change and want to make the switch but haven't seen any of this good oil that you guys are using in any local stores.

Why does the poll show only two choices?
Do this: Pick the "worse" and cheapest synthetic oil on the market that has the current API ratings (SM). Use that oil and your car will last no less long as if you had used AMSOIL or Mobil1 or any of the other brands. People say this oil is great or that oil is great but how do they know? They like the purple color? They think paying a premium means longer lasting car? How many of these people actually send a used oil sample to a testing lab like BlackStone for thorough analysis? Yet the ones that don't have their used oil analyzed will push their brand of choice hard. Lots of hearsay, lots of parroting the claims of others. Me? I use the cheapest on-sale full synthetic and don't have the dillusion that one is much better the the other. I've seen the UOA's (used oil analysis) at BobIsTheOilGuy dot com and I'm convinced that as long as (1) the oil has the latest ratings (2) is synthetic, (3) correct viscosity and (4) mated with a decent filter, your car will last 300,000+ miles regardless of brand. Please guys lets not turn motor oil into a religion filled with passion and fervor ;-) |

for the Yaris (you're thinking Scion XD?), and you wrote that you use 0w (wouldn't matter if a 20 or 30 followed because my Yaris owner's states 5w30 only)...so, to follow your rule number (3) start using the "correct viscosity" if you're still expecting to see that 300k miles on your motor.

![]() And if you live in CA why worry about those "cold mornings flows"...besides, in that TSB that you're swearing by, take note of the note @ the top of the page: "The recommended viscosity grade for this oil differs according to vehicle model. Use the recommended grade specified on the oil filler cap or in the Repair Manual or Owner’s Manual for each vehicle."

I seen a T.V. commercial for VALVOLINE " SYNPOWER " that it gives 4 times better protection to your engine than MOBIL 1 . True ?

there is an Technical Service Bulletin by TOYOTA giving the o.k. for 5w-20 in '06 and beyond . Got the T.S.B. sent via e-mail from the assistant manager of service department where we bought the '08 YARIS sedan , made copy of it and put with our paperwork . We're using PENNZOIL Platinum 5w-20 in it for this stretch , haven't decided to continue it's use . So , call your TOYOTA service center for verification of T.S.B. in their computer system , number is EG018-06 .
