My Test Drive!

Okay, after researching this car for about two years, I FINALLY got inside a 2009 Yaris hatchback... LOVED IT!!! However (as I explained to the eager dealer), I'm still at this point just in the planning stage, as my 2000 car is still doing fine, I'm still putting long hard miles into commutes and intend to do that on my old cheap car as long as possible before starting in on a new one, so was just there to ensure that I actually liked it in person, enjoyed driving it, and wanted one. Nonetheless, I was hustled into a chair, offered a beverage, and given number-crunching. That was fine, as I'll ultimately want to go with the dealer offering the best price. However, when I took the estimate out the door (without a Yaris or order for one on file), the dealer and his manager seemed grievously disappointed -- not to say PO'd?

Guess they're used to people just making the deal right then and there on impulse...

Also, questions: they INSIST I can't get any more "base" than a car with the convenience package ($650), floor mats ($150), and all-weather package ($70); that brings the total "rock-bottom, stripped-down" price to $14,500...

Good??? I don't want to pay $150 for floor mats; can get them at WalMart.

Also... He was insisting he could get it for me within a week; probably a matter of days... Uh, I thought we were looking at months-long waits?

Also... How do you add cruise control "after market"; do you have the dealer/shop do it, or use your own mechanic?

Also... Isn't it smart to say "no trade in," get the lowest price quote, THEN throw in a trade-in to further reduce it?

Final question: the sticker on the window had rear-window defrost as part of the POWER package rather than the all-weather package or convenience package???

Thanks for any guidance.

There are some 2009 LB around here now so he may be able to get one like that in a week or two. You are not asking for anything outrageous after all.

My cruise was installed by the dealer, but lots of people on here have done it themselves.

I negotiated price and then got the price for the trade in. Less confusing on what they are giving you for what price that way. I would not be expecting much for the 2000 Swift though. Might be better off keeping it for a backup car or trying to sell it yourself.

I believe the rear window wiper and defroster are part of the power and convenience packages, depending on which one you go with.

They're part of just the convenience package.

The rear wiper (which I don't even want) was part of the convenience package; the rear defroster was part of the power package, which I want but WON'T be buying...

A little hard to believe you can't place an order WITH THE FACTORY and have the darned $150 floor mats left out??? How do I get a *true* base model???

The rear wiper and defroster are included in both the convenience and power packages. I have the power package and it has both. I test drove a convenience package and it had them as well. I wanted the split folding seat though so I had to get the power package. Below is the actual package info from Toyota wesite:

Convenience Package:
Includes AM/FM CD
player with MP3/WMA playback capability
auxiliary audio jack
satellite radio capability and CD text display function
15-in. steel wheels with full wheel covers
rear window wiper and rear window defroster

MSRP: $680.00

Power Package:
Includes power door locks,
power windows, power outside mirrors
60/40 split fold-flat rear seat
AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability
auxiliary audio jack
satellite radio capability and CD text
rear window wiper and rear window defroster
15-in. Steel Wheels

MSRP: $1,400.00 (alloys would be extra)

My local Toyota dealership has two 3-door Yaris (manual trans.) with convenience package only. The sticker price on both was 13,360.

When ready to buy, I would go to Toyota.com and build your desire Yaris and ask for a quote online from several dealerships.

Good Luck.

thats the exact same price they tried to get me to go for, keep doing what you were planning and throwing #s, different offers from other dealers, and don't listen to their bullshit. In the end i talked them down to giving it to me for 12,000 with 1.5gs down and 6% interest. (although if i just paid my payments regularly w/out going any higher each month the car would be about 14000 w/ interest)

also, i say its best to go before they close, i know it sounds a little effed up but if you've ever worked as a salesman before you know how it feels to just want to get that last customer out.
