Hey Marty,
The instructions that came with my Toyota winter mats specifically warned against installing them over the factory carpet mats. I suspect it may be an issue with them getting hung up under the pedals since the floor hooks cannot catch both mats in unison due to the total thickness.
I simply rotate the carpet and rubber mats between the passenger footwells and trunk depending on the season.
