Patriots point Naval Museum in Charleston is interesting as you have free run in the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown plus a couple of cruisers and a submarine.

The Smithsonian Museum in Washington consists of 22 museums all of which are free,my favorites are the "Air and space museum" and across the mall the "museum of natural history"

If you want scenery how about a drive back along the Blue Ridge Parkway

YES that's the name. I was there once, but it was a long time ago.
