There's a sentimental value to this Yaris that he's taking to the limit. A new one wouldn't be as special. The higher the miles, the more pride he has in it.
Also, if he were to switch out the engine, then the miles are meaningless and illegitimate to the car.
Wouldn't you feel a sense of pride for achieving 500,000 miles in 4-5 years and still be going strong in a car?
