Can we U.S. owners actually install a radio like that first pic?? And if so, is it a straight plug in and it works or must modifications be done?

That's the purpose of this part - To allow a normal double DIN radio to be installed without having the plastic fillers between the radio and the silver trim. So, any double DIN install will look as nice as the picture.
