I've lived in Malaysia (as a student) and had a really great time there, first in Penang for 5 years then Kuala Lumpur for 3.

I'm really not sure about the regulations for professionals to move there and work, but I don't think it's as complicated as over here.

All in all, Malaysia's a great place, very diverse, very modern (at least the major cities), life can be very cheap if you want it to be. Quite importantly pretty much everyone there speaks English (at least a localized version of it ), which can be a great help.

Although there is a strong ethnic mix with a lot of people of Chinese and Indian descent, keep in mind it is a muslim country and as such they have certain laws and traditions that must be respected. It's not extremist in any way, not the type to cut off your hand if you steal something! But still, it must be kept in mind.

Of course, I can also recommend Thailand In many ways it is a more laid-back country than Malaysia, and though more and more people can speak a passable English, it might be harder for you to adjust. And, immigration laws are pretty strict and complicated, a constant reminder that here, you are the foreigner...

There's also Singapore which is probably more modern and progressive than Malaysia, but it's one really really strict country in many ways...
