Tony, you should look in the "brainstorming" thread in the Forced Induction forum, this is exactly what we have been trying to figure out.
Here's a quick explanation, and what we found Closed Loop: The ECU looks at the MAF, throttle position, engine speed and AF sensor in the exhaust to automatically adjust the air-fuel ratio to stay around 14.7:1 which is the best for the efficiency of the catalytic converters. Open Loop: The ECU does not look at the AF sensor and instead runs on a preset "map" and this means you can make some adjustments to the air-fuel yourself using a piggyback. Open loop happens in only a few conditions. The best way we found to enable it, is just to put your foot down! 75% throttle seems to be the trigger point. And yes, in this case, if you have enough modifications to your intake and exhaust, there is a chance that the ECU is not using enough fuel. But, that is unlikely from what we see, unless you have a supercharger or turbo. And yes, this works on our Thai cars as well
