That's what I've done, actually. I kept the factory fog light cover, dremelled it out so that there are still those two horizontal bars. I actually noticed a slight difference in acceleration and throttle response. Because think: ambient air is going straight to the filter, rather than getting warmer air from the engine bay. I say do it.
