Changing Front Brake Pads
My wifes 2005 Camry is going to need front pads soon. Ive changed them myself on other cars and wonder if this car is similiar? I seem to remember 2 14 mm bolts holding the calipers on? Push the piston back into the caliper with a large C clamp? Thanks for any help!

S/B the same or very similar. Hell, I recently did a friend's Santa Fe, and it was nearly identical.

Yes - brake tech - even with ABS has not changed all that much in forever - your method will work fine, and the bolt size is 14mm as you recall

Changing pads is pretty straightforward. If you have neck and back problems, getting the car jacked up and the wheels off and back on may be your biggest challenge.
I just looked and found a bunch of videos on changing brake pads and rotors on YouTube, if you need them. Rotors should be OK if they just have wear that looks like the grooves on an old record. If they have deeper grooves that feel ridgy to a fingertip or will catch your nail, they need to be resurfaced or replaced. Nowadays you can get new Chinese rotors for what it costs to get your old ones turned. |

Right. I plan to have my son help with that and hope to coach him thru the rest as much as possible. Ive seen pistons that were threaded and had to be turned with a special tool to recess them into the caliper body. It would be good to know about stuff like that beforehand! BUt sounds like its a typical front pad job. |

hmmm, if turning my rotors will cost the same as those R1 rotors, you might have another order coming in, Garm.

Threaded caliper pistons will be found on rear disc brakes, and do require a special tool to retract. The tool is cheap and easy to find, but can be a bit tedious to use. Front brakes on the Camry are a breeze, and should be zero problem as long as you have minimal hand tools. For a car you've never done before, its worthwhile to find a photo DIY online and familiarize yourself with the particular caliper you'll be working on. Also, if you're changing rotors, find out if they are screwed-on to the hub like many Honda's are. I had to get a special-size phillips for my wife's old Accord, but still a breeze.

hahaha. I think I found a shop that does it for around that price, so I'll get them resurfaced first, then, next time around, get the R1's from Garm.
