engine surge

Just picked up my NEW Carmine Red Yaris 2-door 5 speed last week and ABSOLUTELY LUV it. I do have a question regarding the engine idle though. Has anyone noticed a slight surge when in neutral? Is this normal or should I bring it back to the service department? The car only has 500 miles on it so I'm not sure if this is normal during break in or if this is indication of problems to come?

How much does it do it? Mine surges from about 500 - 800 rpms every so often, then goes down and almost stalls. It does it every couple of minutes or so when I am idling. It is pretty normal for most cars if you idle for any amount of time, at least in my experience.

Does this occur when the engine is cold or warming up?

No it most cetainly isnt normal. Mine doesnt do it al all. Of course the dealer wont be able to fix it so, yes, in the sence that nothing can be done about it, its "normal".

This happens after the engine has warmed up. When the engine is cold it revs up a bit higher, like 1,000 - 1,500 rpm. Of course I anticipate the dealer telling me they've hooked up diagnostics to the OBD and found nothing wrong, blah blah, but if I tell them somethings specific as a result of a common issue then at least I can nip there typical BS response before they even give it to me.

Yeah dont outsmart yourself. They have no idea how to fix something like this. But if you insist they poke around in there and screw something else up too!
HOWEVER if there are lomon laws where you live if they cant fix it in three tries you could get your money back. You will need a lawyer for that however.

Normal. Until your engine gets toasty warm, your ECU will increase or decrease the fuel instantly so as to avoiding your engine from stalling.

The only time I have a surge is when the AC compressor kicks in. Since your car is new and is breaking-in, run it for 2000 miles and let thing settle in. Go to the dealer after break-in.

My yaris sedan was surging if accelerate in low to mid RPM.
In high RPM it is absolutely fine.
After cleaning the Valve timing controler selenoid and change the oil to the 5w-30, sudenly the problem disaper.

So it must be the camshaft in forward position witouth being able to retard in low RPM due to the selenoid is stuck.

Thats explain, why the high RPM is fine.
