since new march 08, now 34k miles my overall average is 45.5 mpg. been low to mid 40s in winter and low to mid 50mpg is summer

I think the nominal thermostat opening temperature is 184 F. They're not high precision devices, and open gradually over a range of temps, not all at once. In warmer weather it'd likely settle somewhere above the thermostat temp and fluctuate with engine load and vehicle speed.

That's awesome. I still can't break into the 50's again. When ever I enter city driving, my AFE drops from mid to high 40's into the high 30's or low 40's. Arrrgh.
