i'd rather a rear diffusor. they mount under the rear bumper and usually up the rear of the bumper a lil ways. they stabilize air coming from under the car and straighten it out...stabilizing the rear of the car. also increasing economy due to less drag.

the gray section between tailpipes...

Pretty close. More precisely: Creating smooth surfaces underneath the car speeds up the air. If the air going under the car is traveling faster than the air going over the top, you create less pressure under the car. This equals more downforce, which means more traction.

It's just like the way a plane wing works (creating less pressure on top), but upside down.

Canards provide turbulence along the sides, "sucking" more air out from underneath. Same goal in mind, faster air underneath = more traction.

I was looking into these awhile back to try and improve the drag coefficient on my Liftback. If placed properly, they can help to reduce turbulence and improve laminar airflow witch basically equates to a smaller wake.
