Engine ping

So i have a 2007 3dr automatic with 72000kms and shes been pinging on me for the last 30000kms or so. Its not a small amount either its consistent, reproducible and at times very loud. I took it to the dealer who said "yeah its pinging but no we cant fix it" I've tried different gas from every station in town up to 94 octane which does calm it down quite a bit but still does it climbing hills. Also tried different plugs and checked the MAF sensor.

Go to a different dealer. Pinging is can be from a number of things, pre-ignition, blocked exhaust or cat, improper timing, a bad knock sensor, etc. etc.. Your not doing you engine any favors by driving it if it's pinging

Depending on the problem, continuing to drive it will probably cost you more in the end than getting the problem identified and fixed now IMO. 30K kilometers (almost 19K miles?) may have already taken its toll, but if it was me I would pay for the diagnosis.

Run GumOut Regane or Chevron Techron, three times. It will get the carbon out of the cylinders.

I agree with yaris-me. Carbon deposits in the CC are the most likely culprit, especially if no cleaning additives have been used and lesser quality gasoline has been a staple.

It is normal to have slight pinging. But he's describing this as something new, and not slight. Wonder if the knock sensor could be bad?

It's been on a mostly chevron diet so in theory it shouldnt be a gas quality issue. Another thing i should mention is theres some sort of rolling rattle sound heard at idle. It's louder when cold comes and goes. Honda dealer had an identical car with same mileage, I stopped in had a listen to it and it didnt make that sound at all. Tech there thinks timing chain. Brought this up at toyota who said its just the noisy injectors even though the noise stops and doesnt follow a 1-2-3-4 pattern. Maybe this and the ping are related somehow ?
