After reading what you wrote about the gain settings, I thought of a question.
How do the judges "judge" your car? Do they use any test equipment? Do they just listen to your system and try and "think" about how it sounds? Do they crank it up to a specific SPL and then judge it's overall clarity? Do they measure / judge it's ability to reproduce sounds accurately in different frequency ranges? Do they play their own test-source material in all the cars, or can the competitor pick his own music/source media? Do the judges get in the car, and close the doors, or do they listen / measure from different test locations in and around the vehicle? Just curious, since I have never been to a SQ competition before. ALSO: You could grow old waiting for that LRx amp. Is that the one you are powering the sub with? Just get a JL Audio or one of them new High-End Alpine's and finish that sucker! At least you can finish tuning your system, and go to some competitions. You know you don't need to be all that picky with your SUB amp. The SUB is somewhat forgiving. Two years later when you get your LRx, you can swap it out and see if it actually made any difference.

Ok, thanks for the reply.
So your dead amp was your mid-bass. How do you control the freq's to your mid-bass drivers? I would think you would want a narrow range on them. Something like 80hz-250hz. Then you could let your SUB take everything below 80hz, and your mids can have everything above 250hz until the tweeter takes over at maybe 6k-ish? I see sub amps have an LPF crossover, but nothing that would allow me to cut the low bass at 80hz. Some have a subsonic filter, but these are usually around 15-30hz. So how do you only send those mid-bass freq's to the mid-bass drivers? ( You are probably going to tell me your Carrozeria HU can do it. ) A high-end vented 15" is an earthquake machine. More SUB than most cars ever need. MTX 9500 series. But I know you like your fancy boutique stuff. Audison Thesis is probably the best stuff I know about. I have no idea what is better than the Thesis stuff. All that stuff is so unbelievably expensive, at that level, it doesn't even matter. I think all the higher-end consumer stuff is too expensive. I think $500 for a single AMP is too much. ![]() I think if you spend more money on the audio system, than what the car is worth, you FAILED! ![]() But I see it all the time. Dudes rolling around in POS cars, with thousands of dollars worth of audio gear in them. Ghetto rats. Everytime their generic 12's hit a beat, the whole car rattles. Two 12" BOSS subs in a bandpass box in the trunk = FAIL Of course, if you are competing, and that is your hobby, then that is a whole different story. ( or maybe it's your career )

Yup, I had a feeling about that.
I do love 4-way systems, although I have heard plenty of 3-way systems that sound great too. Derick, when are you gonna FINISH your system ???

The midrange goes all the way to 12.5k ???
Have you tried crossing it over at 8k and 10k ? Seems like the system would sound cleaner overall if you don't make the midrange do part of the tweeters job! And one thing I have noticed about ALL audio systems in general: They all sound different at low volume, and high volume. Some systems sound really nice at low volume, but you crank them up and they start falling apart. I only heard a few systems in my life that actually sounded BETTER the harder you cranked them up. Two were car systems, and the other was a home system that was in an acoustically treated listening room. The subwoofer was the size of a dishwasher. It had an 18" driver in it, as I remember. His amps were a mix of top-line Denon and a pair of TUBE amps. The mains were a pair of OLD classic Klipsch horns. ( they were quite large ) The room acoustics played a big part, but the system was also amazing. A cool mix of "new meets old". I kinda like car audio that is a mix of new technology and old-school design.

Well, to be fair, my home audio system sounds better cranked up a bit.
My room acoustics are horrible, but the system is decent. I have an Onkyo cd changer, two Harmon Kardon amps, four Cerwin Vega floor speakers, and a JBL 12" powered subwoofer. I bought all that stuff over the years, piece by piece. On-sale, free shipping. The Cerwin Vega's I bought locally, they were on clearance for $99 each. I think I might have around $1,200 total invested. I never had a car audio system that cost that much. Probably never will. The basic system I put in my Yaris was around $500 total.

owww, Klipsch horns.......heaven on earth when set up right, but very few people take the time or effort. I've heard Klipshhorns that would rattle the windows with crystal clear sound on a 20 watt tube amp. Amazing. I have Klipsch, but not the Heritage line, I'm sporting 10yr old reference, but I'm cool with that ;p
