Now that's an intriguing idea.

Does anyone here run a throttle controller that they can program for instant deceleration?

From what I remember reading in other TB swap threads, you need to let the ECU completely reset between idle screw adjustments--i.e. unplug the battery for at least a few minutes. In theory, that will help with the idle RPM hunting.

Tooter has a 2012, which has an entirely new ECM, so there may be some differences in how the ECM reacts to changing the throttle controller.

I'll still try Cranky's advice (Thanks! ) of resetting between each idle change. I'm really going to crank it down today, because regardless of any of the other issues, it idles too fast. I was thinking that maybe the ECU keeps fishing around for the right idle speed, because the butterfly is prevented from closing enough to acheive it.

I don't remember if it was asked at all, but does this manifold sit any closer to the rad than the plastic one?

Just measured. The minimum distance between the tooter and the plastic radiator reservoir is 30mm. This is the the point where it comes closest to the radiator assembly. It's not nearly as compact as the stock manifold because the runners are larger diameter and curve around a lot so that they will all end up being exactly the same length.

It was the IDLE.

This morning, I cranked the screw out one full turn and did a cold start. Didn't even reset the ECU. NO CEL light. Totally normal start. No racing idle. No hunting for idle speed. Perfectly normal warm up idle. Totally normal hot idle. No surging. No sudden shuddering notch from slight throttle to decel...

...and the throttle response is SUPERB.

(oooh, goody )

So the problem was that the ECU couldn't function properly because the butterfly was being physically prevented from being closed enough by the idle screw which was factory set for a 1.8 and not a 1.5.

I can't tell you how happy this makes me to have found out how to instantly solve all of the problems with just one simple procedure.

It was really dicey breaking loose the idle adjustment screw without stripping it. I used a fractional inch hex key as it was slightly larger than the metric one, and applied Liquid wrench to the threads. Then I put in the hex key and tapped it with a mallot. It turned really hard right at first and then was much easier as the oil penetrated the threads. Now it twiddles without being loose. I'm going to set it with silicone so that if I ever need to readjust it, the silicone plug can be removed easily.

Dyno shop, here I come!

How much less room compared to the plastic manifold? Just asking because the Echo doesn't have a lot of space between it and the rad.

A lot less...
The overall depth of the plastic stock manifold is only 130mm, while the depth of the tooter is 210mm.

I combined the Simota intake tube with the BLOX velocity stack because the Simota is larger in diameter which matches the larger diameter of the Corolla throttle body throat...

Now no adaptor coupling is needed, as everything is all the same size straight through from the velocity stack to the throttle body...

Notice the throttle body?... you'd never know that was an 8 year old junkyard part. Stainless steel micro bead blasting makes the old casting look like it's brand new.

I think I'll go for a ride now.

That's awesome you got it all straightened out. I wanted to adjust the idle screw on mine, but it didn't bother me enough to go out of my way to take the time to do it. Now I kind of wish I had...however, I agree, the throttle response is AMAZING! My fiance, who used to have a Yaris, even commented on the difference it makes!

Can't wait to see what the dyno puts down for you!

Just came back from running errands in town, and the engine runs so GOOD.

I can't believe that it works so much better than the stock throttle body. Especially in low rpm response. You barely touch the pedal and the car is right up to speed. Haven't taken it on the freeway yet, but I'll do that tomorrow. It's all gassed up and ready to take mileage readings.

Neither can I. I'm so excited!

Now the 1.8 throttle body matches the 1.8 manifold as well as the oversized SRI.

Ya, I get snickered at often over at the PriusChat - buncha eco modders.. But its my car, I'll do what i want. I read up on the Bonneville Salt Flats Prius

When they set the 'record' in the G2 Prius, they did it by swapping the 1NZ-FXE for the 1.5L 1NZ-FE otto cycle motor swap from echo, modified the intake routing (but used the 1NZ-FXE intake manifold - no room for the 1NZ-FE manifold because of the Invertor and MG1&MG2 configuration under the hood), JDM TRD ECU, inverter upgrade (550V from 500V), final gear changes, transmission cooling system, custom 1-off suspension, larger front diameter tires and custom exhaust.

What was the record, and how long was the course?

final gear changes
How did they do that with a CVT?

How - dunno?? Not a lot of info on this: The transmission final drive gear ratio for the gas engine was modified from the stock 4.23:1 to 3.2.

Toyota's Landspeed Prius gas-electric hybrid vehicle debuted in Bonneville, Utah as the first production hybrid to race across the Bonneville Salt Flats. The advanced technology of the popular hybrid mid-size sedan was taken to another level as Car and Driver editor Aaron Robinson drove the modified Prius on the three-mile short course, and set a hybrid record speed of 130.794 miles per hour. Other Landspeed Prius drivers included Prius executive chief engineer Shigeyuki Hori, and Fumiaki Kobayashi, group vice president technical and regulatory affairs, Toyota Motor North America, Inc. The Landspeed Prius' historical run also paved the way for a hybrid class to run at Bonneville.

This was all done in 2004... so prob not much of a record anymore. Jetta set one this past year at 186mph but using a 1.4L with a turbo. Class - H/PS. The class is for production cars with engines of less than 1.5 liters that use forced induction. So not in the same class as the Prius...

The all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid marries a 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder TSI® gasoline engine with a seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission and an electric motor. The combined output of the engine and electric motor is 170 horsepower, along with 184 pound-feet of torque.
