No way... but then, I actually wasn't shopping.
Wasn't planning on getting a new car or even hoping to get a new car. Then I saw a commercial for the Yaris... love at first sight, was obsessed, had to have that car, drove everybody I know crazy talking about the car. Finally got the car & still just as happy with it! |

Yeah, I was in the market for a new car and had friends at a Toyota dealership. I was originally looking for a late 90's Celica GT. Then they said "you know, we could get you in a Yaris for around 250 a month." That was that. I still lay claim to the first Yaris in Ohio... maybe someone will knock me off that soap box one day. It was the first one from the largest dealership in the state, that much I know. They were as shocked to see it as I was. |

NO!!!
We like 2-Door Hatchbacks - saw Yaris LB, and fell in love. It's DIFFERENT, and ours is a great performer - zippy (5-Spd), great mileage and plenty of room for our folding bikes. Our next door neighbors bought a Carolla several months later - they love it, but hey, they are in the 80-85 age range. Our other car is a 2006 4Runner Sport V8 to pull our Aframe trailer. It sits in the garage 6 days a week while we run around in our Yaris.

I saw the 2.9% interest sale on the corolla/matrix and thought about it, but I ended up liking the Yaris sedan better. I drove my father's corolla for years andnever really liked the car. I also liked the ammount of trunk space and rear leg room for such a small car, plus I like the styiling better.

Test drove the Corolla and the Yaris. They seemed surprisingly similar in handling. Went with the Yaris Sedan. Almost went with the Corolla. Didn't really care if grannies drive it or not. It was just a smidge too big, and I didn't believe the bs that it got about the same gas milage as the Yaris, and I wanted to vote with my dollars and help to promote smaller car sales. I miss the old Corollas that came out around '95. Nice, simple and utilitarian looking. Dealer tried to steer me into Scion Xb. I said no way, you must be joking. (jeeze that xb is one ugmo). The dealer admitted they don't sell many xb's, and believe it or not, when I see one, usually a granny or grandpa are driving them. Went with the sedan, hunchback was too elf-mobile looking for my tastes. So there you have it.

Well, it's a no-brainer if you need a hatchback. Corolla doesn't come in a hatchback, and the Matrix costs $18,000 nicely equipped. A loaded Yaris hatchback can be had for just over $15,000. Better MPG, too.
A no-brainer, like I said. |

I can buy any Lexis cash. I think it is stupid to "invest" $$ in cars, and pay big $$ for gasoline. This is all stupid.
I wanted these things: Low Gas costs. High Milage. The least amount of $$$ to spend for a Car. Reliability, durability. F--- looks. F--- what others think of my car. F--- that it is not made in the U. S. The bottom line for me is to pay the least for a car, repairs, and gas. I'd rather invest my hard earned $$ in Real-Estate, and other high yield investments. Real investments. The Yaris allows all this for me. What is really sad is that our society (American) have lost our ability for Delayed Gratification. You see this all across America, in most every Apartment Complexs; just cruise the parking lots there....these stupid renters are often driving $30,000, $40,000, and sometimes $50,000 cars...where in the hell are their priorities? They live like Rock Stars on a BS budget, and they tell themselves "I deserve it...I earned it"...what dillusion! Renters that live like that mortgage away their future, their retirement, expect their family/kids to share bedrooms, live like lower class people. Well, I deserve a Yaris, and I am proud of it. Those that buy cars for how they look, what others may think, what perceived class it places them in, or for posing reasons are all losers. As for the Corolla, yea I considered it, but it was too expensive, not as good on MPG as well....buying it would mean less $$ for real investments. |

In the US I just paid $13,300 for a 2007 LB with power windows, CD player, power mirrors, auto-tranny....I thought it was a great deal...a cheap amount of $ to pay for such a fine car. I could've paid a bit less for a BS Korean car like a Hyundia or Kia, but anyone that reads ConsumerReports would not go that direction.

I'm 47 and single these days, and a few times I had dates with women that stopped seeing me because I didn't drive a "great car"...imagine that! I don't have regrets however....who cares what they or others think....better to laugh all the way to the bank, yea? |

Not much price difference at all in Canada. Get more horse power out of a Corolla too, and has same MPG. Really, IMO, comes down to which you'd rather drive, a more 'ordinary/plain' Corolla with somewhat of an 'image' attached it it, or the more interesting, 'fresh' look of the Yaris. I'd be happy in both! Corolla has some nice small benefits which I like it for more than the Yaris. And vice versa. Love both vehicles. As to the rest of your post/rant, though I agree that yea, a car is a brutal investment (vs. other investments like real-estate, etc), I dont agree with your assessment of these ppl. So they're "stupid" bc they chose to value other things in like besides a 'quality investment' ? There's a lot to be said about simply being happy and content in life. If a car makes you content (more so than a fine house, then good on you!) Be happy. Who the hell is buying a car bc they think its a good investment either? No one! Not fair to call these ppl stupid on this basis. And yes paying a mortgage on a house/property you can eventually own is wiser in the sense that in the long-term you actually permanently own something and wont have to make payments later on, you have that income freed up for later in life... but prioritising your future isnt the only way to live you life. you can be perfectly content and happier now at a little sacrifice to future potential. You can value today more than tomorrow in the long-term (and thats not to say ur living like shit in the long-term tomorrow), or you can chose to sacrifice now for the long-term tomorrow. Both are perfectly valid choices. No denying that same ppl actually screw themselves out of a good long-term tomorrow buy over spending now on worthless things or trying to live much beyond their means, and end up in real hard, horrible situations, but thats not every or id say even most ppl that chose to enjoy a truly fantastic car for themselves. You have different priorities in life. Great. Dont go around knocking other bc they dont confirm to what you deem 'smart' and a 'better' way to live. I use myself as an example. I'm leasing my car. I know that I'm paying more in the long-run. I'm paying Toyota and costing myself over 5 years an additional $1,200 (did the factoring). Some will say "WOAH! WHAT A WASTE of 1,200$" I beg to differ... that extra $100 odd dollars i have in my bank account ever month for the next 5 years is MORE than worth it to me at this point in my life. I value that 100$ a month extra now far more than the overall cost savings of $1,200 overall. In 5 years the buyout on my Yaris will be peanuts and so much more inconsequential to me than that $100 is each moth presently. My earning potential will have doubled by then once I have my professional designation. Everything needs to be put into perspective. Not all ppl values the same things equally, and that's isnt a bad thing or a wrong thing. Jem

Funny, when I was young I use to think like you. So did my friends. At middle age, they, and I have changed our thinking. What does that tell you? Well, I hear what you're saying, and it seems that you're under 30 and/or have no children, and/or not married, so I can see how you have your very unwise opinions...but there's hope for you...as you age you will change your tune, as most of us have. Using your logic, people should be "happy" when they cannot provide for themselves, or their children, or their future. Happy. It seems you use that word too losely, but that's cool. |
