Japan implemented TQM successfully, and USA did not. It is a major culture change that the USA is not willing to make. Japan makes higher quality goods as a result. I do not know any UAW folks, so - "no comment" on that. It does seem like the Big 3 is constantly at war with the UAW, so with all that going on it is hard to focus on quality cars. Honda USA and Toyota USA do not, as of yet, have UAW workers. Interesting?!
BTW Toyota is now one of the big 3 they supased Ford some time ago

WOW.... realy so what about the VERY common problem of the coil spring just breaking on those cars? and the struts blowing out? The calipers always locking up, there ass backwards slide pin set-up in the front that in not sealed and always rust solid and locks the brakes up, rear wheel cylinders that always have leaky seals....Outer and inner tie rod ends, ball joints... I could go on and on with the common problems with this POS car, we used to love when Escorts rolled in to the shop, they were one of out biggest money makers, there was always something wrong with them

Never saw a 97 Toyota Carolla in that condition

Never had any major problems at all with my Escort. I had it from 98-2005 and it had 90k miles on it when I traded it in. I did notice the retarded front brakes though. Mine developed a nice squeak. I did have to replace the outer tie rods at 75k but I would call that routine maintenance.

Perhaps now that I own a Toyota I will see stuff like that in a different light.
What once seemed normal might become unacceptable.

You sure made me glad I traded it in when I did though!

Sorry about my freak out man.

Your 1997 Escort is essentially a Mazda engineered product - NOT Ford engineered

Getting back to the post.....Is US of A the place you want a car built? I won't get into the union thing....Management at most factories here are killing the quality, they want to pay entry level wages to all workers...my current personell manager has said more than once that a person there for 5 years shouldn't get a raise unless that raise is consistant with the percentage more production he does than the new guy off the street....in other words he wants a warm body at minimum wage. Sadly he never mentions his worth in the production scheme!! US needs to shape up.

no i will not buy an American made car again. my family has been a loyal Honda/Toyota fan since i can remember(at least after the vw beetle was banned in puerto rico in '73) and in '05 i bought my first American made car, a brand new SRT4.

after 3 water leaks, front bushings, a/c connections, steering rack bearing(wtf is that???), then a steering rack, oil leaks, coolant leaks and the shittiest customer service i ever experienced i went back to Toyota(Yaris=japan made).

I have no regrets in my decision to trade in the "most powerfull car under $20,000" for the econo box-gas saver Yaris.

the quality of the american made cars is crap mainly due to the fact that they gotta pay an asshole 8hrs when he only works 1hr and still complaints that he needs a raise.

If that fucker would work the full 8hrs then there would be no need for the other 2 shifts that only work 1hr each. then the money saved from that can be used for better r&d and to buy better products to use on the cars.

the BIG 3 will crumble if they do not get rid of uaw. is only a matter of time!
