Just another question, will I need to remove the wheel to undertake the maintenance? Any general thoughts as well on actually doing the work? Will be the first time I do something like this.

It is best done off the car to avoid getting paint where it should not be.

Also, when painting you can mask the tire with masking tape. Another way to avoid painting the rubber is to use a cylinder of thin metal that fits around the outer edge of the rim. I use 6" wide aluminum flashing to do so when I paint wheels with the rubber still on.
