Question about HIGH Speeds - Toyota Yaris Forums

Lol that's fast.

I just feel like this car needs another gear for lower rpm and cruising speed. It would make the engine quieter and offer more mpg at these speeds. It's not near as loud as the 4speed auto. Talk about engine noise...

I recall the 4-speed automatic actually having higher final gearing than the 5-speed manual. So, at 60 MPH, for example, the manual runs higher RPM's than the automatic (and may therefore be ever so slightly noisier). There have been a bunch of threads on this issue.

I think the automatic runs reasonably low RPM's at highway speed, and I don't find the engine terribly noisy. Of course, I seldom travel over 70 MPH.

That's interesting.. I've driven an auto and ithe engine was a bit louder... But it also had 150k miles on it so that may have been a factor too.
