When I considered replacing my Tercel in the early 2000s I actually chose to forego picking up anything and kept the Tercel because I wanted a basic and cheap A-B car yet couldn't get passed how I felt driving an Echo. Things happen for a reason tho. After 10 worry free and enjoyable years with my Tercel I sold it to a gent for 2k and bought my Yaris sedan.

Nice! I was luke warm on certain years of the Tercel, but all in all it was a great car.

No doubt the Echo is one of the most awkwardly designed cars of the modern era that was sold in the US. I stress US because we've all seen how hideous many of the cars are in foreign markets, especially 3rd world countries. Seems they are blind to design. I don't know how the Echo's design was signed off on for sale in N America. No other Toyota had shared any similarity either.

It wasn't winning any beauty pageants, that's for sure.
