Yeah first thing you do is get the gearbox warm (like before its winter) and drain that oil into a clean pan so you can examine it.
If you find a lot of metal in it (the oil has a metallic sheen) you've got a lunched tranny. Or if no oil comes out, ditto... If the oil looks OK put new oil in and see if you got the rattles. Also, get the car up on ramps and go over the underside of the car looking for loose nuts and bolts. You just might find something... Good luck and tell us what happens!
