Selecting a Head Unit for my 2010 Yaris

Hello Everyone,

I am selecting a head unit for my 2010 Yaris and wanted to come here for a bit of advice before buying it. I am going for a low budget and hopefully decent audio quality unit, at least on par or better than the standard '10 HU. The only features I must have are Bluetooth music streaming and calling, since I use them frequently.

I am not sure of which of the following units to choose. I was about to select the JVC, but keep hearing better things about Pioneer. Any suggestions to put this to rest?

Thanks

I am considering the following JVC: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDX3...S.html?tp=5684

Also the following Pioneer: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130X370...l.html?tp=5684

I have run Kenwood Excelon series for years. I love them. I will not use anything else.

I am running this:kdc-x998

Looking at the price of those ones you linked to, I would recommend this: KDC-x599

If you have to choose between those two, I have never liked a JVC I have heard, but I have heard some decent Pioneer units.

Thanks a lot! Decides to also pick up a pair of front speakers.

I own pioneer, last 2 cars Ive had I put in pioneers. I cant bad mouth them, really, but the next one will probably be a kenwood. Pioneer sounds good, but after a few years both of mine have gone soft in the preamp output. The pioneers have 2.5 volt outputs and the Kenwood is 4volt. If you get a amp in the future, this will make a difference in sound level. I need HD radio too. You'd be surprised how many more stations there are for free on HD.

regardless of headunit picked, are you able to get a proper wire harness to go from OEM to it? That was the benefit i always saw from buying from crutchfield, etc.

I'm still debating if i want to other with nav, but i do want a touch screen, volume knob, hd radio, bt. Maybe even one of those android units (vs ipod dock)

I installed this DUAL brand unit in the Yaris before trading it in.

90 bucks at... hmmm... O'Reilly's or Autozone, I forgot.

To make it look decent and work properly, you'll need the metra dash kit (to fill the gaps -I had a Euro radio bezel in mine-) and wiring harness, making it plug and play in your Yaris.

Metra wiring adapter and dash kit: Metra 95-8202 + 70-1761. $11.65 on eBay.

Looks like the radio is also available for $70 at Walmart online.

Nothing to write home about, but a lot better than the factory unit. It has full BT, and front USB and aux-in.

Wasn't gonna give away my Pioneer with GPS, which I un-installed from the Yaris before trading it in, and installed in my tC.

That's actually the Pioneer I linked to in my previous post. Going for $165 on Best Buy's eBay site right now.

Did you need the Metra adapter and kit to make the Pioneer work, too?

Heh. That's the same one I had in my Yaris and have moved to the tC. Paid $220 for it brand new. There's a newer model but I don't know what the differences are. Go for it, it's a very good unit.

If you want to have USB and AUX-in right there where you have it now, you'll also need USB and aux-in adapter. Axxess AX-USB-35EXT. $9.99 in addition to the parts in the post above. Otherwise you'll lose the aux-in altogether.

PS: and yeah, you'll need the wiring adapter to hook the stereo into the car's wiring harness, and the dash kit to fill the gaps on the side. See:

When I had it in the Yaris, I used a Euro market radio bezel, eliminating the need for the Metra bezel kit.

I must be one of the few people in 2016 who doesn't like touchscreen info-units in cars . Minus the lack of HD radio, I actually preferred the look/feel of the OEM stereo system in my old 2000 Accord over the OEM head-unit setup in my 2015 Yaris (love the blinding glare off the screen every day!). I also hate that they are still putting CD players in cars. The CD player in my Accord died at around 37,000 miles, and I never bothered to fix it. I doubt that I will ever even use the one in my Yaris.

Kalispel, you're welcome to buy the one I took out of my tC. Direct fit, plug and play, no adapters or harness required.

Make me an offer and I'll take it off eBay.

I'm also planning to replace the factory unit, but for me I'd prefer a factory look unit like this http://www.dvdgpsnav.com/2din-toyota...nit-yaris.html

I contacted dvdgpsnav to see if they can give me a better price.

While I would have liked a Nav unit, i spent 1/2 as much and just mount my phone for the 1 off times i need it. if I use BT audio, I also get the sound though my car speakers.
