Another option would be to extend the pipe into the fender well where it would be better for pulling in cooler air not heated be the engine and rad.

I had considered a CAI when I first got the car, except we live in an area that's subject to flooding in the Winter.

I don't want to turn the car into a wet vac.

Yeah, I've heard enough "wet vac" stories to convince me that a CAI is not for me... especially because of where we live.

Doesnt brands like AEM have a "bypass" for CAI, those allows for the intake to still take in air should you run into a flood

Yes. AEM does. An you'd have to drive trough about a foot of water I order submerge the filter enough to use it.

The DC Sports CAI we just got in stock points the filter towards the front of the car - significantly higher than other brands.

I have the same thought process as tooter, I live in the sunshine state which ironically is a very wet and raining area lol and I am slammed so I cant run the risk.

I am interested in either a cold air like the DC that angels up a little or maybe getting a elbow and making my own from my afe.

Jeff or Garm do you guys happen to know the clearance of the filter from the ground? I can get an idea of how high it would sit in my car?

Looks to be about the same height as the bumper support.

IT'S RUNNING!!!

(yipee )

Just couldn't stand the suspense any longer...
...so I went ahead and took off the Yaris manifold, bolted on the tooter, plugged in the hoses, and fired it up!

It starts right up, runs nice and smooth, idles nicely, no CEL (yet!) I can't drive it yet because there's no air filter. But I can at least rev the engine... .. and wow... does it jump off idle quick! Revving in the higher ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 feels about the same as before, but actual driving will tell the tale... and then when the ECU has learned the new conditions, it's off to the DYNO!

You can see from the pics how far to the right the inlet is pushed. They sent a 45 degree fitting instead of a 90, so I'm still waiting for the right one to arrive.

The installation is a snap. There are no clearance issues anywhere, especially with the throttle body location and attitude having been altered. All the plugs fit without stressing the wiring. I just used some scrap tubing to connect all of the devices to the tooter which also has three inlets.

Man... I AM SO EXCITED!

Soon I'll post a youtube video of it running!

Awesome job tooter. I am so impressed when people custom fab their own parts from scrap. Great work I'm excited for more updates.

I DROVE IT!!!!

(oh yeah... )

I tied a T shirt over the velocity stack, duct taped it tight, and took the car to town to buy gas while it's still under $4.

I can hardly contain myself I'm so effing excited!Driveability is superb. You have to remember that I didn't dare go over 3,000 rpm for fear of sucking the Tshirt into the engine!

So being really conservative all I will say for right now is that the engine did not lose ANY bottom end.

edit: Oh, almost forgot...

NO CEL LIGHT!!!!

(oooh, goody... )

You think you're excited!!!

I can't fully describe how personally satisfying this whole process has been to take a concept and address all of the details to produce a finished working manifold in just 2 months. I feel like a pioneer because up until now no one has been able to come up with a normally aspirated working alternative to the stock plastic Yaris manifold.

Just from driving it to town and back... I can't wait to put the tooter manifold on the dyno!
