My first oil change
I took my yaris into the dealership today. I was just a little early at 2,936 miles but it's all about prevention. It took for freakin ever for them to get done with it. There was only one guy working though and I didn't have anywhere I had to be so no biggie. I'm thinking I should've just opted out of the oil for life and just did it myself. Then again oil isn't going to get any cheaper and the cost of an oil change is just increasing over time.
Has anyone else purchased the oil for life from their dealership? |

Just did my second oil change today.
15 minutes start to finish, including clean up. Do it yourself next time, its cake. |

I know how to change oil, was a grease monkey for a bit (not the actual grease monkey shop). I have the oil for life package so going out and buying my own oil would be asinine. Besides, oil is only going to get more expensive. Sure, it takes some time at the dealership but down the road, it'll be worth it.

Something like $399 for the life of the vehicle. Toyotas last forever so I'm gonna end up making out on this one.

If you have to take the car in to a specific dealership to honor the free oil, I think it's a bad idea. It's like giving a waiter the tip before you even get seated at the table. The motivation to receive good service is no longer there. Also, once the car starts to rack-up the mileage and the $400 you gave away in good faith starts to become a liability to the dealership. I'm sure they'll easily find away to wean you off the free oil.

i'm actually surprised that the dealership performed the oil change at such a low mileage. most dealerships will only perform these types of services at much higher intervals, with the lowest i've heard being 5000 miles (obviously done in order to make money for the dealership). if you can keep up changing your oil at 3000 miles with this dealer, then i think you did get a pretty decent deal for 400 bucks. with the way most people drive, thats at least 5 oil changes a year. you'd recoup your money in about 3 and a half years. even if they used dino oil, changing it every 3000 should help to protect your engine. i personally use amsoil on all my vehicles and change them every 6 months (about 8000 miles). japanese car oil changes are a breeze...

Does the US toyota dealers have the quick lube, I drop my car off at the quicklube bay, and with 15mins its done, you can even watch through a glass window, or hang out in the bay if you wanted to...( I enjoy wandering the showroom floor dreaming)
I also go early morning when the doors open to avoid any line ups. |

normally it wouldn't take so long but two guys were at lunch and it was a saturday. and it's christmas season. and the dealership is right next to the mall. i highly doubt it will take so long in the future.

My dealership offered a lot of possible plans, but not for oil changes - sounds better than any they did offer for a longterm owner.
My dealer has a quick in-and-out oil change program, but takes about 45 min. Being retired, that is not a problem for me.

Something else I wanted to add, my dealership, has free internet, free food, and a sitting area with newspapers, tv, and such, and a kidsroom.

$399 can quickly become a bunch more if you rolled it into your loan.
How much does an oil change cost if you pay out of pocket? You also have to consider that you might have trouble down the road if you have engine trouble under warranty and you don't have the maintenance paperwork trail. I still have not decided whether or not I will do my own oil changes or not. It depends on how much the dealer charges.
