Help a former Civic hatch guy!!!
So I am in the market for a Yaris hatch...
I used to be in the Honda world years ago, Did some engine swaps (don't want to anymore) Had one lowered to race, one lowered for DD. Couple EFs (88-91) one EG (94) also had a 2000 EX, and an Acura RSX-S. NOW fast forward to 2017... Married, home owner, keeping my older Land Cruiser but am going to trade the Tacoma in on a Yaris hatch I hope. I need something I can tinker with and such. I really want a manual, but am not sure what the "best" year or generation is? If there is one... I would love a newer LE but seems if you want keyless entry you have to get an auto. :( I will not be hetting a fully loaded model. I want a base to start with. SO probably I'll end up in an L 3-dr to begin with and go from there. part of me can't believe Toyota will put an up to date Entune BT unit on a base model but no factory keyless entry remote. Guess I'm looking for a manual tranny... I'll be tinting the windows, Eibach springs for starters, brace the chassis a little, new wheels and tires and just making a good fun car for myself. Doubt I'll dive into the audio. I do like the BT in my 2015 Tacoma, it's just stupid convenient. And the back up camera has been a life saver. No track days, I want to keep the engine as reliable as you'd expect a Toyota to be. Possibly an intake if there are some and maybe a nice muffler, I need to keep it civil on the freeway. The search is on, and we haven't ruled out ordering a 2018 L 3-dr MT also. I have a great relationship with the local dealer as they have ordered Tacomas for me in the past with great success. Nothing crazy like TRD models I just like the 4-cyl engines in Tacomas so they have to order them. Wild I know. Thanks in advance gang... This is the Yaris that has me wanting a hot hatch again! Google is great! |

"best" generation might just be the newer one (ncp131, 2012+) considering all the support in japan, better stability, improved chassis.
Outside of the obvious exterior differences, the 2 generations of yaris in US (06-11, 12+) they share the same basic suspension, and same engine. Many many things are interchangeable between the two. getting an L? look for an SE rear axle for rear discs :P engine? beat on it! if it blows (REALLY hard to), get a new one for about 500! |

So would TRD components listed as 1st Gen bolt onto the 2012+?
I appreciate the heads up on chassis stuff being improved in the 2nd Gen. I didn’t realize they all shared the same engine. |

it might be better to call the 06-11 as 2nd gen, and 2012+ as 3rd gen.
1st gen is the echo, other countries call it a yaris, japan named it vitz, which all our generations are named.(not sedan) depends on the trd component. most will. shock/springs/rear sway bar are shared, for instance. |

The SE is definitely worth getting.

Thing is the SE can’t be had as a 3-dr. 5-dr only.
Guess I can look into it but I really want a traditional 3-dr small hatch. |

Honestly folks,
The 2018 L 3-dr M/T is looking real good. ESP in my signature color (Silver) It has a tach, full B/T connectivity and it seems I may get lucky with it being pre-wired for mirrors. Also the gauge cluster has the symbols for cruise so maybe it’ll be pre-wired for that too. The only other M/T model in the US is the SE. So I’m sure it’s the same ECU. I added cruise to my old 2013 regular cab Tacoma this way also, It was completely pre-wired. I’m willing to take the chance I think. I’m still needing to contact my dealer and get the OTD prices on the two models, not to mention availability. |

Thanks, it’s a stupid nick name my family gave me as most of my cousins are FT mechanics or instructors now, lol...
We love to talk shop but I don’t work on other people’s cars for the money like they do. However I was a service advisor for Honda/Acura/BMW for 15 years as my first “career.” So I hold my own when we get down to the nitty gritty! |

I bought a 2016 L with a manual brand new. Same thing, wanted the 2 door with a stick. I added cruise and power mirrors to my car. All prewired. Going to work on factory keyless entry next, just need a day where I can tear half of the interior out in two of the Yarises here.

I agree with enviri. Also to add, not only do you get the rear discs with an SE, but also larger front brakes.
imo 5 doors > 3 doors. A manual SE is a rare breed. :)

The other goal is as little and short of a car loan this next go around.
With my equity in the Tacoma as a trade I'm looking at only 213/month and paid off in 3-yrs or less. Hence the base L 3-dr, M/T. |

NO first gen part are interchangeable with the newer models. They completely redesigned everything except for the Long Block.
