Winter tires?
Tirerack.com has tire performance ratings for all their tires in all conditions. Click on the tire and look for the colorful graph.
The stock Potenza RE92's have terrible scores. They are rated 21 our of 22 tires tested with a lowest score 2.7 for ice traction. A good alternative all-season tire, the Yokohama AVID TRZ. It's lowest rating in winter conditions is a 7.1 for deep snow traction and 7.2 for ice. It rates number 1 in it's category out of 29 tires. Price- $56.00 each. Rated number two is BFGoodrich's Traction T/A. This tire also has good ratings, though not as good as the AVID TRZ, and costs $62.00 each. Both of these come in the stock 185/60/15 size. The only way to beat these traction scores is to use a winter specific tire which will then suffer in dry traction ratings. |

Tirerack.com doesn't carry (or rate) the Nokian WR, which seems to be the best all-around winter tire choice to me.

From all accounts, the stock Potenza RE92s seem to be crap. Why does Toyota install such lousy tires?

The stock RE92's are not the cheapest 185/60/15 on tire-rack, they are actually one of the more expensive.

the tires that come equiped on the yaris are geared more towards fuel economy by reducing rolling resistance. this unfortunately implies that they will score a lower rating in a traction comparison.
good job finding good winter performing, all-season tires. i've been thinking about doing the same.
