Woofer Mounting question

A long time ago I had a nice JL bandpass box and the box got thrown away years ago but for some reason I kept the clear faceplate from it...

I would like to incorporate the face plate into my setup to protect my woofer ..but i fear that i might inhibit air flow on the front.. here is what i am thinking...

I was thinking of making some stand offs for the plexi front so that it leaves room for the woofer thenleaving a good 2" channel all the way around the plate then putting another sheet of MDF to be flush with the plexi

here is a pic of the front.. so the plate is about 3/4" thick and i was thinking of making stand offs to jack it up 3/4" as well so my woofer will have well over 1" for throw..

all that to ask... IF i do this will i restrict air flow too much on the outside of the sub? or should i just leave it the way it is? It would be nice to add for some added protection and pizzaz

thanks!

thats what i figured :(

i also noticed a few people making their stealth setups like mine and noticed they made a cover of sorts for the woofer to make it look stealthy.. it didnt say wether or no they remove them when using the sub.. or if what they are made of that doesnt retrict the sound from passing through

i think you would have to use a thinner plexi cause bandpass plexis are pretty thick so there for they dont really flex. not unless they have cut outs in the plexi to allow the air to come out. heres one thread that has it but they just use the floor mat http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9486

idk if my little band saw will survive through that stuff .. it is thick

i think if you were to port it in the direction you want. but you would have to add some 2-3 inch clearing then youd prolly be fine and do 3 sides and leave one side open like a huge port which should actually work

well i was thinking of leaving all four sides open.. I might just leaving 3/4 inch clearance under the plexi then leaving 2" around the plexi too .. so the port would go all the way around the plexi..

all i would have to do is cut the top part in the shap of the plexi but two inches bigger . if it doesnt work/sound good.. i'll just put the cut out back on :)

hey Tiny... what you want to do is similar to "slot loading" a sub. In a slot load box you have a normal box (sealed, or ported) except the sub plays against a wall. this is much more often used in Home Theater than car audio. In car audio it is usually used to help direct all of the bass wave under the rear seats in an SUV or Minivan.

this link shows two HT subs that are slot loaded
http://www.audioreview.com/Subwoofers/PLS_2741crx.aspx

as far as that big piece of acrylic goes... ONLY USE 1/2" or thicker when dealing with subwoofers. Especially if the piece is larger than 1sq ft. Acrylic flexes more than wood. My first ported box I made back in 02 had a 2sq ft plexi window. I went with 3/4" and was SOOO happy that I didn't skimp.

if you think about it... Slot loading is a BETTER form of downfiring a subwoofer. Downfire setups are common in Home Theater.... Google "sonotube sub" and you'll see what I mean.

here is what I ended up doing :)

I dropped the box another 3/4" by affixing it to a new top piece.

and i took that plexi and printed up a big logo and taped it to the bottom of the plexi and took my time with the multi cutting tool on the dremel..hour or so later and two dremels (killed the brushes on the first dremel. lol had to return it to home depot and get another one) came out great though...

I have some Blue frosted tint i was thinking of doing the plexi with then installing some clear LED into the plexi on two sides to make the whole clear part light up :)
