Subs and ohms and amps -- oh my!

I have an MTX Audio MXA6001 amp. It's 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms, and 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms. I have a 12" MTX Audio T5512-04 sub paired with it, single 4 ohm voice coil, 300 watts RMS. I thought it sounded good, if that gives you any baseline about my audiophile-ness.

Anyways, that sub is too big for the Yaris IMO, it just won't fit properly. So, I am going to buy a new, smaller 10" sub.

I'm going to build a new enclosure that will be a maximum of 1 cubic foot. I will decrease the size accordingly with whatever the manufacturer of the sub suggests.

Anyone have a suggestion for a sub? I'm open to anything as long as it's under, say about $140.00 -- less is always better.

If space is a major concern you could do a pair of shallow mount 10's. Two of the Pioneer TS-SW251 would be right on budget. Two subs, each with single 4 ohm voice coils, would allow you to run your amp at 2 ohms.

Just a thought.

What kind of music do you listen to and how loud?

I designed the box so a single 10 would fit in it. I'm keeping this install small and simple. It's going to be fitted perfectly behind the smaller of the two rear fold down seats. That way I'll be able to still fold down the larger of the two fold downs and put my junk in.

I listen to everything, which kinda of sucks in the way of what sub to choose. Country, rock, rap, metal, hip hop, classical, funk, truckin' music, classic rock, big band, bluegrass, AM talk shows, techno, reggae, house, jazz, blues, etc. Seriously... I listen to everything. The only thing I can think of that I don't like and listen to regularly is gospel music.

And I don't listen to it terribly loud. It's not like a want to be cruising around the block setting off car alarms. I just want a decent 10" sub.

i assume your 1cuft box is a sealed box... any of these should work fine.

parts express has good products for the most part, sometimes on the cheap side. I dont have experience with the subs he listed. i do know that parts express does carry Lanzar and MTX brands, and I can say that those products are very good, i have flogged several of their drivers and they are quite nice.

he linked the 10" low profile Tang Band sub, and if their 10 is anything like the two 5" subs I am messing with at the moment, it will be more than adequate for what you want.

edit...just read you are running a 1cuft box...lanzar and most mtx are out...they like bigger boxes in most applications if I am remembering right.

Have you tried a shallow 12"? I have a Kenwood shallow 12" in the car so I could keep all my crap in the trunk area including the donut. Now I'm not huge on loud sound anymore so I decided not to build a box around it on the bottom. Only hear the bass inside the car and not the outside so it's fine to me. Check it out if you haven't. Maybe it'll give you another option.

This is my basic design. 3/4" MDF with my measurements would give an inner volume of 1.0043945...... yea 1 cubic foot.

Depending on what the sub calls for, I may be able to recess the amp into the top or side of the case. Some 10's are calling for a .75 cubic foot box, so it might work. Otherwise, it'll just go under the passenger seat and the box will get stuffed.

I think talnlnky has some good ideas there. I have heard really good things from some picky listeners about the Dayton Reference subs. The HF that he linked is geared more for home audio with larger enclosures but the t/s parameters of the HO are more in line with your setup.

Have you considered in selling the setup you have now and go with something like an Infinity Bass Link? Pre amped and all.

Are the Dayton subs made by the same company that makes Dayton wheels? =P It looks cool, but my amp only puts out 300w RMS at 4-ohms. The one you linked is 600.

I said above, the amp will either be recessed into the box, or under the passenger seat. I don't like the boom tube things, deffinetely not the sound quality I'm looking for.

You're right. Something more efficient would work better.

You're budget actually allows for lots of options. You could even go for a JL 10w3v3 which would be a very safe bet. If you wanted to go a little less mainstream you could try an RE Audio RE10 or SR10. Image Dynamics is another one to look at.

Dayton is primarily a no-nonsense proven designs type company that caters mostly to the Home Theater DIY crowd. They make quality products.... so does Tang Band.

sealed boxes are cool cause it doesn't matter too much if your box size isn't what its supposed to be for "optimum/.707 Q) because you barely change the frequency response by going bigger... and you can make up for up to 40% of a box size by adding polyfil which means if the sub likes 1.4cuft box... you can come very close to getting that result using polyfil and a 1cuft box.

I like RE.... they were sooo cool back in the day, still make great products... but they no longer have the awesome pricing that they used to. You used to be able to pick up an RE10 for around $65. If you can get one for less than $80 its not a bad sub. But if you're pay more than that I think you might be better off with something else.
The biggest problem with the RE Audio "RE" line is the loose suspension which makes it really easy to bottom out the sub. If only they made the sub with a 2nd slug of magnet to give it another 1/2" or so of rearward clearance. Would be well worth the $5-10 cost.
