Tree falls on my car

I park in an open parking lot. There's a 50 foot eucalyptus tree that hovers above a couple of cars. Well, looks like a giant part of the tree came crashing down on 2 cars, including mine. I can't see shit, so I don't know what the extent of the damage is, but can see that it will have roof damage on the passenger's side and a cracked windshield.

The neighbor's 1989 Nissan 240 is not so lucky. Part of the stump landed on his trunk, which bent the car in half, and his windshield is toast.

I already filed a report with the police, and considering this happened at 4am, have to wait until our management office opens up. The police said that it was a "private" matter, so they really couldn't do anything but acknowledge the accident.

I wanted to get the ball rolling with my insurance company, but they don't open until 8am Pacific time.

The waiting game begins. I'll probably take more photos after the tree has been removed.

It seems to be drivable, I just can't tell for sure until all of that rubbish gets cleared out.

What a pain in the ass.

I shudder to think what may have happened if this fell during the day. Lots of elderly folk/children about the place.

Well, here's the damage.

One cracked windshield

One broken right rear-view mirror

Roof damage to passenger side--dent.

I'm grateful, here's the neighbor's car that was parked next to mine.

What the crap?!

What are the chances of a branch falling on a Yaris sedan and an S13 coupe?!!

At least the damage isn's that bad as if it were the whole tree. Sucks to hear man. Let us know what insurance does for you.

You got very lucky.
A new windshield and mirror and it's basicly good to go....
I don't expect your neighbor to get much for that old car though......

I'd say it held up pretty well, considering.

So I've dealt with the insurance company today, and all is good. I just came back from the body shop, by coincidence, they're owned by the dealership where I bought my car. They have a great reputation.

I'll be paying a $500 deductible when the body work is finished, and the insurance company will get me my money from the property management when everything is settled. Reimbursement, if you will.

What a long day.

Wow, sorry to hear that, but at least you'll be reimbursed.

A few winters ago, I saw a VW Golf absolutely demolished by one of the trees at my college campus. It was really bad. The entire tree (one of them BIG shade trees) fell on the car.

I agree. I expected the roof to be damaged much worse.

at least you weren't in the car while this happened. It would really suck if you were moving while it fell down.

hope all comes out well.

If a tree falls on a Yaris and no one is around to hear it does it make a sound?

Well, seven days later, we are making progress.

The bodyshop that I took it to was an authorized shop fully endorsed by my insurance company, meaning my $500 deductible will cover everything. It's weird, I guess some insurance companies are starting work like hospitals/PPO's. I was told that if I decided to pick my own shop outside of their network, I would have to go out of pocket 20/80 percent.

What's even cooler is that the body shop is owned by the dealership that I bought my car from. They're down the street from each other.

I got a call from my lead guy at the shop, he said the car sustained $4,747.90 in damages, and that it would be ready by July 24th.

I'm assuming my auto insurance company will also try to get me my deductible reimbursed from the property management company.

The 60 foot tree is gone, they chopped it all down. There's just a base. I'm tempted to count the rings, freakin tree is probably 50-60 years old.

Anyways, that's my current status, I'll be updating as I get more info.

Thanks all!
