Exclamation Smoke from power window today.......

Hello Guys,
I've driven my yaris hatch back for 43k without any problems until this evening..as i was driving, smoke started to come out of the power window switches on the left side..i turned off the ignition and got off the car with my kid,so scary though....the burn smell still lingers inside the car.
Now,my windows would not roll up or down and the emergency lights does not work ..i am planning to take my yaris to a toyota dealer tomorrow ..I have never heard or read about smoke coming out of power windows...Has anyone guess what would have happened...
i dont have deep pockets and guys, help me out..thanks a lot.

I don't think I've ever read about this issue on the forums. I do recall one about a dash spontaneously catching fire though... Scary stuff.

Maybe water leaked down on the door panel and caused the unit to ground it self?

Hmmm fuses should have prevented this. Did you check them?

The power windows are fused at 30A. Depending on what shorted, it is quite possible to emit smoke well before the fuse pops.

As for the turn signals now not working; They are on completely separate circuits, but both them and the power window control routes through the body ECU, so maybe it got damaged.

I remember reading something about power window switches shorting out from rain water making it's way down inside the door on the Yaris at some point when I was looking to buy one. Can't seem to find anything but this thread at the moment though.

Another good reason not to have things like power windows! And if you do have them keep your windows rolled up when parked at all times.

I'm glad it's not a common issue.

When it rains, the water DOES land right on those switches. I cover them as I get in or out as best I can when it rains.
My '93 and '97 Saturns both had the switches between the seats, better place...
