Emergency: Anyone in Vegas?

I ran over a tow hitch on the 15 freeway on my way back to Southern California from Las Vegas visiting family.

The tow hitch ripped through my oil pans both lower and upper and my car is at a local dealer in Vegas.

The quote is $2900 for labor and parts to replace both pans. Apparently the upper pan can only be replaced by removing the engine from the car (15 hours of labor at $130 per hour).

I obviously don't have $2900, anyone know an independent shop that might be more affordable?

The orginal quote was over $5k as I have a bent sub-frame and lower control arm as well.

My insurance doesn't cover road debris (only animals, natural disasters.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

extremely frustrated,
Chris

At that price, you're better off trying to find a salvage yard and get a used motor.

Wow, I'm sorry! I better check my insurance policy as something like this would throw me for a loop.

That is truly a nightmare. Engines are readily available and are cheap ($250 to $500 off ebay), so replacing the engine might be the better route. Hopefully someone local can point you to a reputable shop that won't gouge you like the dealer.

If my insurance didn't cover that then I would tell them I hit an extremely stout jack rabbit. Or a deer and it went up under the car. Or an elephant. Anything but pay that crap out of pocket.

What's the point of insurance if they aren't gonna cover something like this!? F'ing insane!!

Sorry to hear that.. what a bummer.

Similar thing happened to my lowered Honda a few years back, on my way to work I hit a huge pothole and scraped the bottom of my tranny when the car bottomed out. All the tranny fluid leaked out on the parking lot at work.

I had it towed to the dealer that afternoon and the mechanics told me the damage is covered by insurance. What happened is the insurance would then go after the city for reimbursement due to 'road hazard' or poor road maintenance. At least this is how it works in Toronto.

Not a Yaris, but I flattened out an oil pan on some railroad tracks once while hauling ass. What a pain. Damn sorry to hear about yours.

Yeah, i was told it only covers natural disasters in the road (mudslides, fire, etc) and livestock or animals.

The only debris it would cover is from a collision.

The good news is, I had the car towed from Vegas by a friend and I am going to have the car up and running by this weekend hopefully.

The subframe was bent pretty bad, I need to find a used one, because a new one is crazy expensive.

Looking for a subframe now, anyone have one or know where to find one?

- Chris

Junkyard would be my first guess. There are a good amount of them in LA, I happen to have a couple dozen near me as well. If you need a number to get you started let me know. All you really need is one phone number, if the guy doesn't have it ask him for a number, repeat until you find your part.

*just make sure the junkyard part isn't trashed too....

Man, at that point you should have just driven it into the wall and said you were cut off to get it covered LOL
