Plastic piece above gas pedal

I purchased a 2009 Toyota Yaris Sedan last week. There is a white plastic piece above the gas pedal. Sometimes I hit it when moving from gas to brake. It's a bit annoying. Does anyone know what this plastic piece is for? Can it be removed?

I can post photos if it's unclear what I'm talking about.
