Yaris: How Many RPMs @ 70mph?

Just curious... test drove a Hyundai Accent, and I was wondering how it compared to the Yaris in gear ratios.

Thanks,

~YR

Huh. The Accent turns 3600 @ 70mph! It may be 5th gear, but I really wonder if it's an overdrive gear or not?

Nope, it was indeed 5th gear. Had I gone from 4th into 3rd at that kind of speed, there would have been the obvious lurch and noise associated with decel. If you check around any buyer reviews for the Accent, it's a common complaint that 5th gear is too low. For the life of me I can't think of a reason it would be set up like that. From what I've read, dealers are getting hammered with complaints about it and the resulting poor fuel economy.

I rented a Hyundai Elantra while on business a few weeks back.

It was an automatic (rental) and I am pretty sure it was under 3K at 70mph. Probably more like 2800 or so.

It sure was fun to drive, albeit an auto. I really like the looks of the Yaris HB though.

what about 80 - 85?

That's how fast I'll be going for about 600 miles out of state.

I bet your rpm is alot higher then its supposed to be,in 1st 2nd and 3rd,untill you get up to speed, this is where the weight of the rim bennifits your car, more rotating mass thats already spinning, this gives the car a high forward momentum, which helps ease engine load, the faster your going the better(for this effect,be safe ofcourse). But check your rpm going uphill

Well the rpm is going to be a bit lower for the same speed across the board, but it does take more effort to get goin.

I've noticed that my MPG figures remain the same (31-33) whether i'm going 80+ or cruising 55... before cruising 55 would get me 35-36mpg.

Going off the post here that noted there is a 6% difference, its just an educated guess :)
