Question Help me, I'm a newb and cant get up!

Lo!

So I hated the sound from the stock speakers in my 07 5 door hatch Yaris,

I went down to Best Buy, I asked the car audio guy what specs I should look for when comparing speakers, but he did not know.

I feel bad for him as I worked at best buy one christmas, and you are given no training.... But anyway.

I purchased a pair of these = http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...35&catid=20114

2 6.5 inch speakers for the front doors, I picked them based off of the sound in the store.

Some song about bringing sexy back was all they had, singer was a female I think, or feminine

I figure I will replace them first, then the rear speakers, then an amp + head unit.

Replacing the front speakers was a breeze, though I had to learn how to remove rivets and window cranks.

I soldered the speaker wires to the speakers, installed them, and they sound TERRIBLE!!!!

There is so much distortion, for maybe the top 20% of my volume level. The toyota speakers sounded better.

Where did I go wrong? The solder? Do I need an amp first?

I don't want to invest in an amp and head unit and find out I have made a fatal error with the speakers.

Any feedback is appreciated, I have learned a lot from posters on this site and I look forward to your advice.

Thanks!

- Newb

A) Your stock head unit and speakers suck, but they are built to match.
B) You should have shopped crutchfield, but seeing as you went that route...

You should check the minium wattage rating on the speakers. Also, keep in mind the THD of your head unit's amp (total harmonic distortion) is likely VERY high. The top 20% is not loud, or more power, just more distortion, farting bass, etc.

You can never go wrong with a HIGH QUALITY amp and descent head unit. Check out the Alpine's on Crutchfield, they have a 50x4 or something on there that will do you right all day long. It's probably about $250.

It sounds like these are OK units, note the comment on the lack of bass, usually that's because of a lack of power. The Yaris also has a deceptive bass response at low volume that turns to crud at mid-volume. I think you're moving in the right direction... but need more.

A) Yes, the stock speakers are designed to put out decent sound on what little power the stock deck provides. Your new speakers need more power.

B) Crutchfield just started a Canadian web store! I've never used them, but I've heard they are good.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick help!

It looks like a good amp is where I should invest the most, and from reviews and your suggestions it sounds like Alpine is a good brand.

I will take a look at Crutchfield, maybe they will have more information then best buy.

I have a couple basic amp installation guides, are there any threads here with a Yaris amp guide? Search did not turn up one. Should be easy to remove any paneling if the rest of the car is consistent with the front doors.

Thanks again!

Woah Alpine

Just a note, Alpine amp on the canadian Crutchfield site is 429.99

299.99 for a sony.

But, with electronics its like they say, "Buy quality, cry once."

So I will save up for a bit and go from there.

Alpine makes really good stuff. But it's been argued that the price premium is partially due to the "name" thing.

Alpine amps are going to be expensive everywhere you look. You can consider buying one off eBay if you don't mind something "grey-market" with no warranty.

Saving up is a good idea.

SNAP , CRACKLE, AND POP!

I finished installing the rear speakers, so I have 4 x http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...35&catid=20114

2x 6.5" in front

2x 5.25" in back

I still have the stock stereo

-

I went to best buy to get my new deck, as they install them for free, but they do not have the harness for an 07 yaris! not for 6 weeks!! !! WTF!! But that aside,

All of my speakers are making a snap, crackling and poping sound now, What would cause this? Are they installed incorrectly or should I still wait for a new stereo?

Hope I did not (*#& up the speakers....
