Are any Yari's made in the USA?

I don't think so myself, but a guy on another forum is saying his 2010 Yaris was made in the USA. I think he's confused.

No. North American Yaris are all built in Japan.

If the VIN starts with J, it's made in Japan.

I checked the window sticker tonight when I got home. Mine says:

"Port/Plant: Portland, Oregon" Since my VIN starts with a J, I'm assuming that's port of entry for the ship from Japan. Most of the parts under the hood say Japan.

But, I can see where someone might think it means it was built in Portland.

Vitz designed at Toyota's European design studios. Built in Japan, France, and Thailand. All North American models are imported from Japan.

My car has "montreal" written all over it in the airport code, YUL. I can only assume then, with the portland example, that the parts are all shipped here and then assembled?

I wonder have "grey market" Yari should up here? Cars not made in Japan and imported illegally? This might be a disaster if you bought one thinking it was US approved.

If by "assembled" you mean puttnig the wheel covers and antenna on, then yse I guess you could say it was "assembled" at the dealership. But Yarii and most cars are driving on and off the ship, so they're fully functioning once they reach these shores...

Why bother? The car is availabe in this country so there's really no reason to gray market an entire car here. Now, maybe some of the rarer aftermarket parts; but entire cars, not likely...

Cheers! M2

If you read farther down into the story, after they are shipped in from Japan (completely built), at Portland they clean, add fuel, and accessorize the cars before shipping out to the rest of the country, either by train or car carrier.

So I guess I win my argument with the man on the other forum. This is the first thing I've ever found that he is misinformed on.

This ain't Albania, it's not as easy to sneak it into this country as you'd think.

And why buy an illegal gray-market car when you can buy the US version? You can't register and/or use it on the road. If you try and get caught, you are in some serious shit with the Federal government. It's not worth going to Federal PMITA prison for a Yaris!

There isn't a Toyota plant in Portland, Oregon.

Toyota assembly and parts plants

I'm pretty sure that my Yaris (2010 3 door liftback) also had "Port/Plant: Portland, Oregon" on the window sticker, and the plate on the door states that it's made in Japan.

I'd say with 99.9% confidence that every USDM Yaris is made in Japan, shipped to Portland, and then railed/trucked to the dealerships over here.

Yes, all N. American Yaris's are built in Japan regardless of what the dealer might say. Window stickers always list port of entry, sometimes near the assembly info, which may confuse some.

I can't believe a dealer rep would get this wrong. It's the most basic of all knowledge of the car. It's as common knowledge to a salesman as knowing that the car is FWD and has a 4-cylinder engine.

There has been speculation though, that Toyota may move Yaris production (new 3rd gen) to N. America. This is mainly because of the strong Yen which is really hurting Toyota profits right now, particularly for economy cars with an already low profit margin. This may mean the end to the Yaris being one of the most reliable cars ever made. Nobody builds cars quite as well as the Japanese when it comes to quality control.

You know, its very encourageing that people have led such sheltered, happy lives! The rest of the world is not a nice place inhabited by law abiding people happy with their lives. They do all kinds of bad things. Like import weed, meth, and other drugs. You think they are worried about what Uncle Sam is going to do?

Now, I dont KNOW if there are illegal yari in this country but it would not spurise me at all to find out some one is doing it. However dumb it may seem to some.
