I dont wanna get off topic here but if you perform a compression check you use a guage with a valve in it to make a good reading.
Now what i think you actually mean is when you put compressed air into a cylinder, and you are listening for air releasing from either intake or exhaust valves. Thats when you will apply oil. But honestly you can use water if u wanted. Its just oil will burn up when spark hits it and/or gets forced thru the rings with the old oil. Water will serve the same purpose. Its just u dont wanna mix oil/water dur. And water wont burn up in the cylinder and we all know about liquids and being compressed in cylinders. Totally off topic. Sorry. I'll leave it alone now.
